Vomiting or Diarrhea: Symptoms and Related Conditions

Vomiting and diarrhea can have many potential causes — from dietary indiscretions to serious internal illnesses. These symptoms can quickly lead to dehydration, making it essential to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Based on your pet’s symptoms and history, we’ll create a diagnostic plan to determine the root cause and provide effective treatment.

Important: Never give your pet human medications without veterinary guidance. Many over-the-counter drugs are toxic to dogs and cats.

Types of Related Issues

Upset Stomach

  • Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite
  • Treatment: We perform a physical exam and may recommend diagnostics to identify the cause. Treatment typically includes anti-nausea medication, fluids, and dietary support.

Pancreatitis

  • Symptoms: Severe vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy
  • Treatment: Pancreatitis can be life-threatening. We provide rapid diagnosis, fluid therapy, pain relief, and a tailored care plan to reduce inflammation and support recovery.

Viral Infections

  • Symptoms: Fever, vomiting, coughing, lethargy
  • Treatment: We offer testing to identify viral infections and provide supportive care to help your pet recover comfortably and avoid complications.

Toxin Ingestion

  • Symptoms: Sudden vomiting, drooling, weakness, tremors
  • Treatment: Immediate intervention is critical. We use decontamination protocols, activated charcoal, IV fluids, and monitoring to treat poisoning cases effectively.

Urinary Tract Infections

  • Symptoms: Frequent urination, accidents, discomfort
  • Treatment: UTIs can mimic symptoms of gastrointestinal upset. We perform a urinalysis and provide targeted antibiotics and pain management.

Ingesting Foreign Objects

  • Symptoms: Vomiting, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite
  • Treatment: If your pet swallowed a toy, blanket, or other object, we offer imaging and surgical or non-surgical removal depending on the case.

Overeating

  • Treatment: We evaluate your pet’s condition and provide medication or monitoring to resolve symptoms and avoid serious complications like gastric dilatation.

Dehydration

  • Symptoms: Weakness, dry gums, sunken eyes, lethargy
  • Treatment: Dehydration is a serious risk with vomiting or diarrhea. We provide IV fluids and assess the underlying cause to stabilize your pet’s condition.

Pain

  • Symptoms: Whimpering, reluctance to move, behavioral changes
  • Treatment: Vomiting and diarrhea can be symptoms of painful conditions. We assess your pet’s discomfort and offer pain relief as part of a full treatment plan.
